World War II in La Vernia, Texas

"World War II had a dramatic impact on America, even in La Vernia, Texas."

"Before the war started, I remember playing in our front yard and seeing Army Air pilots flying down main street, so low, I could see the pilots’ faces and often waved to them as they buzzed by."

"When I told them what had happened, the Reverend said, "Son you shouldn’t lie like that." Many people cried, like my Grandmother Frieda Strey; knowing that many people would be killed, especially our young men. It scared me half to death."

"The next thing that happened was that nearly everything was rationed. . . My Father had no more new or used cars to sell. . .  He bought an inner tube and tire vulcanizer to make extensive repairs on tires. "

"There were many meetings held in the school building about bomb raids, fire bombs and watching the skies for airplanes and . . ."

"On the day the war was over, in 1945, about five of us had went skinny dipping in the Cibolo Creek. We suddenly heard the cars honking their horns loudly and the church bells ringing. We rushed out of the creek, dressing as quick as we could and ran into town. We knew it was over, what a joy! People were drinking and celebrating by . . ."
