OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT – Sends us an interesting budget of News Items
for Yesterday – Lavernia, 13 August 1879.
The rain that fell a few days since has wreath the farmer’s and
stockmen’s faces with radiant smiles – and even the cows, like their owners,
anticipate better times. With the thermometer at from 93 to 99 in the shade,
short grass, scarcity of water for stock in many localities, squares
dropping from cotton, do you wonder at the elongated condition of the
granger’s faces, or the look of gloom . . .
Gardening has been carried on diligently during the past week. Seeds of
almost every kind, from cucumber to the most hardy winter vegetables have
been planted, with every prospect of abundant yields; for it frequently
happens in fall seasons, with abundant rains, that no frost comes until
January. Ripe tomatoes have been gathered from gardens here as late as
January 4th. Diligent and intelligent labor will accomplish much,
and most of the farmer’s . . .
People in this locality believe the Sunday law to be a good one, but many
doubt its practical efficacy in some localities. Much as may be said pro and
con in the case, as our civilization advances we must gradually fall into
the European or early Christian style, rendering . . .
Despite the long dry spell, our farmers will have a small surplus of
corn. Fodder has been saved – gathered in great abundance.
