Special Update
La Vernia Veterans Memorial Park Update
July 22, 2008

The Memorial Park committee continues to seek a special site in La Vernia, to honor those who have served our Nation in times of need.  The committee plans to honor not only the Armed Forces – the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force - but the Merchant Marines, the shipbuilders, the farmers who grew crops for the troops, “Rosie the Riveter” women and the wives who stayed behind to raise the families, and more.  The hopes for the monument are as noble as the sacrifices it will represent.

Representation in the project is open to anyone who feels a closeness to La Vernia.  In other words, the veteran did not have to live in La Vernia per se.  Many people have a special attachment to La Vernia even if they did not actually live here.  Plans for the monument’s appearance have not been decided because the location has not been determined.  The physical size and layout of the site will affect the plans for the monument, including any displays, gazebos or benches which might be placed at the site.

The committee, through the approval of the membership at a special called meeting on June 4, 2008, made an offer on a 2.8 acre piece of property near the Cibolo Creek, on FM 775.  The offer was much lower than the asking price, so our offer did not succeed.  The real estate agent who is assisting us has advised us to raise more funds before we enter the local real estate market.

Other locations are being considered.  The committee will get back to work on the project as soon as HammerFest is past.  If you would like to work on the Memorial Park committee, please contact Kip Workman or one of the officers.  Watch our website for updates. www.LaVerniaHistory.com.
